Rush Creek Yacht Club (RCYC) announces its Spring 2017 Youth Sailing Programs. There are
numerous programs for kids starting at seven years old that span brand new sailors to
advanced racers. The programs include: TSA Youth Circuit and Key Regattas, Special
Events, and After-School and Weekend Classes.

 TSA Youth Circuit/Key Regattas

Coach Andy Casey will be onsite for the RCYC Junior Sailing Team during the Texas Sailing Association (TSA)
Youth Circuit Regattas. His role is to provide off and onthe-water coaching during both days of the regatta and help coordinate the travel aspects of the racing team.

Spring/Summer TSA Circuit Highlights:

February 25-26:    Changes in L’Attitude Kick-Off Regatta at Corpus Christi Yacht Club
March 11 -12:        Spring Fling Regatta at Lake Canyon Yacht Club
April 1-2:                Rock the Rock Regatta at Corinthian Sailing Club

May 20-21:            Silly String/TSA Girls Champs at Grapevine Sailing Club
June 3-4:               Chocopalooza at Rush Creek Yacht Club

After-School Classes

Beginning Optis (Opti Green) are those kids that are seven (7) years old or older and want to develop sailing skills.  Taught in Optimist Prams, the most popular kid’s sailing boat in the world, the beginning class will teach the following abilities:

  • Rigging an Optimist dingy and learn the parts of the boat
  • Sail in straight lines both on and off the wind
  • Capsize recovery
  • Identify where the wind is coming from, points of sail, and sail trim
  • Know basic maneuvers such as tacking, jibing, docking
  • How to start a race and go around a race course
  • Responsibility for equipment and teamwork

Opti RWB (Red, White and Blue) is for those kids that have perfected the basics of rigging and sailing their Optis.  The goal is to perfect their handwork, footwork, boat tuning and boat handling techniques.  Focus on tactics and racing rules will improve their finishes on the race course.  Sessions will include:

  • More focused practices to improve specific skills
  • Being able to sail in ANY breeze condition.
  • Sail trim, control adjustments, and body placement that can maximize boat speed.
  • Perfecting maneuvers including roll tacks, roll jibes, kiting, quick 720′s, mark roundings and starting acceleration
  • Understanding wind shifts, race course strategy and starting strategy
  • Overall fitness of the sailors
  • Team work
  • Responsibility for their equipment

The 420 and Laser are used by many high school and collegiate sailing programs and is used for most of TSA Circuit events.  It is designed for those older kids that have aged or sized out of the Optimist Pram.  Students in this program will concentrate on:

2017 Junior Race Team Pricing Structure

Optimist Sailors:
Full Time Opti. Includes all scheduled sailing instruction for the race team, all TSA regatta coaching
fee’s and unlimited sailing in spring and summer clinics…$195.00 per month.

Opti sailors who attend majority of Regattas but can only make some practices (either Monday and
Wednesday OR Saturday, includes spring clinic and one week of choice in summer clinic) all TSA regatta
coaching fee’s…$160.00 per month.

Laser/420 Sailors
Full Time Laser/420. Includes all scheduled sailing instruction for the race team on, all TSA regatta
coaching fee’s and unlimited sailing in spring and summer clinics …$195.00 per month.

Laser/420 sailors who attend majority of Regattas but can only make some practices (either Monday and
Wednesday OR Saturday, includes spring clinic and one week of choice in summer clinic) all TSA regatta
coaching fee’s $160.00 per month.

Additional Fees/Discounts
- 10% sibling discount (only applies to juniors who make a 12-month commitment).
- $25.00 additional monthly fee for juniors that are not able to make a month-12 commitment.
- $25.00 additional monthly fee for use of junior club boats (*Juniors using a club boat during a
regatta are responsible for securing and transporting the borrowed club boat to and from the regatta, a
- $50.00 charge will apply for abandoning a borrowed boat at a regatta).
- $25.00 additional monthly fee for non-club members. Non-members will be required to fill out a
credit card authorization or bank auto-draft authorization for monthly dues.

* Pricing structure does NOT include coaching regatta fees for National Events except for Texas
Youth Race Week. If your child attends a National Event and needs coaching, price will be structured
accordingly.
**This pricing structure is only available to juniors that are actively involved in the Texas Sailing
Association circuit and are already at a competing level. For beginning or novice sailors please register
your child for their appropriate sailing class. You may contact our Vice Commodore of Education,
Wendy Vandling, for questions regarding beginning sailing instruction.

CoachAndyMeet Rush Creek Yacht Club’s Junior Program Manager and Head Coach, Andy Casey. Coach Andy comes from the San Francisco Bay area, is a lifelong sailboat racer and has been a sailing coach for over 17 years. Andy has produced Youth Championship Sailors at a National and International level.
